A leading UK engineering firm, known for delivering cutting-edge electrical and electronic systems to the global rail market, is looking for a Business Development Engineer to drive growth across the South of the UK. With a strong track record in supporting major fleets — including London Underground — this role focuses on building relationships with rail operators, maintenance teams, and engineering departments.

The successful candidate will combine technical expertise with commercial insight to identify opportunities, support maintenance programmes, and deliver tailored solutions for retrofits and new installations. This is a great opportunity to join a forward-thinking business shaping the future of rail infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive and implement a focused business development strategy targeting rail rolling stock and maintenance operations across the Southern UK.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with key stakeholders, including engineering, maintenance, procurement, and project teams within major operators such as Train Operating Companies.
  • Offer expert technical support on the design, selection, and integration of electrical and electronic systems for both new build and retrofit rail projects.
  • Work closely with internal engineering and product development teams to ensure solutions align with customer-specific requirements.
  • Proactively identify and pursue new business opportunities within maintenance frameworks, upgrade programmes, and system enhancements.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of the rail supply chain, including procurement processes, compliance requirements, and industry regulations.
  • Deliver compelling technical presentations, proposals, and quotations to win and retain business.
  • Track market trends, competitor activity, and customer insights to help shape ongoing commercial strategy and product development focus.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in business development, technical sales, or applications engineering within the rail industry, ideally with a focus on rolling stock.
  • Solid technical understanding of electrical and electronic systems used in modern rail environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of the rail supply chain, procurement cycles, and maintenance frameworks, particularly within London Underground and Southern UK operators.
  • Confident engaging with engineering and technical teams, with the ability to interpret complex requirements and present effective solutions.
  • Self-driven and target-oriented, with the ability to operate independently in a field-based capacity.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and negotiation skills, both written and verbal.
  • Willingness to travel frequently across the Southern UK, including regular access to London depots and operator sites.
  • A relevant technical qualification (HND or Degree) in Electrical, Electronic, or Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
